Entrepreneurial curiosity seems to be stuck to our DNA, we were born to create and find ourselves fascinated with helping others through services and products. This is the reason why thousands of bold professionals are leaving their jobs to become business owners.

How ever I seem to constantly hear this question in workshops and coaching sessions:

How do I get started?

This can be a lingering idea that can take years to materialize, specially when there is no clarity about what to offer to how to pitch. This is why I wanted to create a small list of tips to understand the first steps of planning a new business project.

  • Find your strength and passion: Creating your own business must be about something that you are really good at. Ideally, you can use your knowledge or area of expertise to think about how this project could be about. Remember as well this is what you´ll be doing daily now, so you must be passionate enough to make this your day in day out routine.

  • Create insights on what you bring: Thinking about what you can offer professional and are passionate about, it´s important to think of services and products aligned to this. Have a conversation with yourself and ask yourself what would you like to provide to others.

  • Think about the expenses associated: Think about how you wil bring this products to others: do they have a fixed cost? do you need investors?

  • Consider in a realistic way how many hours can you dedicate to your new project: This doesn´t only mean working hours (7-4/8-5/9-6, etc) but also commuting time, etc..

  • Start with a goal in mind: Once you know what your business will be about, set out an initial financial goal you want to reach. Make the calculations necesary to understand how many clients/projects/classes/products you need to sell or acquire per month.

  • Tell others about your idea: This is a good moment to get advice, once we have it all ¨figured out¨, we can get the opinions of those who love us.

Initial investment

When planning the early stages of a business, it´s important to consider which expenses are associated to running it. Do you have to rent a space? Hire helpers? Get a website?

Try to find a kind heart who wants to help out, or look straight forward for an investor who can set you up with seed capital on a good plan and event mentor you. Make sure you create an effective bussines plan that will create proyections for 3, 6 and 12 months.

*FREELANCER TIP if you are not willing to take your fulltime job you can work towards offering services in your area as a freelancer or consultant.
